A BRAND new initiative at Wauchope High School was introduced last Wednesday to great reviews.
The new Anti Bullying campaign was launched with an assembly which was attended by member for Oxley Andrew Stoner as well as teachers and students from all grades.
The campaign is the first of its kind in the school and is unique as it was developed by the students themselves.
The proactive campaign will provide students with skills for life and the workplace against the pressures of negative relationships that result in bullying.
A grant has been provided for the school to enact the program which is coordinated by deputy principal Ms Narelle Burrows and has taken nearly a year to implement.
Mrs Burrows is proud of the students’ hard work and says the launch was a great success.
"The launch was fantastic,” she said.
"The kids really got behind it and they have a sense of ownership over it because it’s their ideas.
“Bullying is a major issue in all schools and this initiative will hopefully curb it in the school significantly.”
It was a long process to get the initiative off the ground with students, parents and teachers holding forums to determine the most important areas to address.
A lot of research went into the program with polls and many ideas used in the initiation of the Anti-Bullying campaign.
The day itself was celebrated with some of the school’s most talented artists painting five posters – promoting the anti-bullying message – which will be hung around the school.
Member for Oxley Andrew Stoner attended the launch and said the campaign reinforces Wauchope High School’s place as one of the best high schools in the Mid North Coast.
"The process that the school used to implement the initiative is outstanding,” he said.
“I will be informing the NSW parliament about the process the school used to implement the initiative and suggesting that it could be used in other schools.
“I want to congratulate the whole of Wauchope High School for the fantastic effort they have put in,” he said.
Mr Stoner says the involvement of students in identifying the causes, types and outcomes of bullying was critical because bullies and the victims themselves usually try to hide the bullying behaviours.
