Mapping out your dairy career

14/08/2008 5:00:00 AM
THE Mid Coast Youth Careers Services, North Coast TAFE, ANZ Bank and Dairy Australia have joined forces to provide support for the Cows Create Careers project which promotes career opportunities in the dairy industry.

Wauchope High School is one of six schools in the region to participate in the Cows Create Careers Project.

Last Monday, Tracey Stokes, who owns a dairy farm at Toms Creek, donated two calves and volunteered her time to talk to the Year 9

students.

The two calves will be under the care of Wauchope High School for three weeks. During this time students will also learn about career opportunities and after Monday have already learnt that it is a growing industry in the Mid North Coast Region and female employees are highly valued and sought after.

Under the guidance of Wauchope High Agriculture Teacher Adrian Palmer, Industry Mentor and Wauchope TAFE Teacher Andrew Collins and local diaryfarmers Tracey Stokes and Irene Carle, the students will prepare a data show presentation, research poster, newsletter and a thank you letter/report which will be submitted to the Cows Create Careers project team.

The final presentation announcing the winner will be held in Wauchope in Term 4.

TAFE NSW (North Coast Institute) are also delivering rural traineeship training in the local area. This is open to anyone over the age of 15 with no maximum age limit and allows not only training on Campus but also places a great deal of emphasis on being able to complete practical tasks whilst employed on a farm in the local area.

Cows Create Careers is one of many adopt a school projects that Mid Coast Youth Careers Services facilitates in the region. The adopt a school program encourages business to adopt a school in order to engage people in hands-on learning experiences in a specific industry.

If you would like further information please contact Carolyn Ellis at Mid Coast Youth Career Services 6583-5910 or National Coordinators of Cows Create Careers, John Hutchison or Deanne Kennedy on 03 5659-4219.
