Blues eye off top three finish

14/08/2008 10:36:00 AM
THE Wauchope Blues semi final aspirations come down to a home game on Saturday against the Old Bar Pirates.

With the team currently sitting in third spot, one point ahead of Wingham Tigers and two points ahead of the Pirates, Wauchope need to win this week and the following week against the Taree Bulls to ensure a home semi final.

With the competition being reduced to six sides, the finals series will revert back to the old style four team semis with one playing two and three playing four.

If the team can remain in third spot it will ensure the Minor Semi is played at the Lank Bain Sporting Complex in Wauchope later this month.

The Wauchope side have had a season that could be classified as inconsistent but two draws with the competition leaders Port Breakers through the season has proved that the team is capable of matching it with the best of them.

Fullback Todd Clark has been a shinning light and while the side may have been a little inconsistent, Clark's form has been 1st class throughout the year.

Winger Luke Davis is a very exciting player and dangerous every time he touches the ball. He is complimented by Jamie Trotter on the other wing. Jamie's positional play is second to none and he has shown that he still has a turn of speed when required.

Centres Anthony Coombes and Kyle Debreceny are both young players full of promise and Coombes really knows how to score a try. Debreceny is in his first year of grade football and has improved steadily as the season has progressed.

Five-eighth Kurt Boyd is a player with undoubted natural ability and has filled in at five-eighth well although readily admits that he prefers the back row.

Halfback and coach Dean Anderson has played well all year and the side is certainly a better team when he is on the field. Ando is enjoying his first year of coaching and has done a fantastic job to get the boys to where they are but wants to take advantage of that and wrap up third spot on the ladder.

Front rowers Tim Coombes and Troy Barrow are the go forward players in the side with Coombes being the best in Group 3 with his powerful surges. They are readily backed up by young bull Jared Davey who has learnt his trade by keeping his head down and listening to his coaches and he also spends a lot of time with club legend Rod Franklin.

2nd rowers Ryan Beaky and Dan O'Shea are a perfect combination with Beaky being outstanding in attack and O'Shea a tackling dynamo. Both are adept in the other facets of the game but know where their real strengths lay. Beaky in particular offers something special to the side.

Lock Justin Laurie is the go to man and he has been the standout player again this year. Justin's ability to draw in defenders and get the ball to players in good position is second to none in the competition and his defence is also rock solid.

They are backed up by a number of quality players who have been rotated in the starting 13 throughout the season. The Cook brothers, Kurt and Jacob, never let anyone down when they are given a chance and both are at home in the backs or the forwards. These two players are as tough as they come.

Murray Joyce and Shannon Walmsley, Drew Latimore and Craig Arentson, Adam Marchment and Kurt Doherty have all been given a chance at different stages throughout the year and do a fine job whenever called upon.

The reserve Grade fixture on Saturday is 3rd verses 5th. It will be a good game because the Pirates love to throw the ball around which will make for some entertaining football. Coach Andrew Shaw is hoping that the team will begin to play some consistent football as we head into the semi finals.

While it has been a tough year in some aspects, it is good to see so many good young footballers having a go each week. This side is capable of matching the better sides in the competition if they can put it together for the whole game and not just in 5 minute bursts. I think that over the next two weeks we will see what this side could have achieved with more consistency.

The Under 18's will be hoping to finish the season with a flurry and it starts this week at 12.15pm.

Be there to see three games of exciting football for just $5.
