HASTINGS League players, Leith Costigan and Nick Knox have gained selection in a NSW 2nd Divisions representative team to play Queensland in July.
Costigan, who celebrated his 200th game for Long Flat on the weekend and Knox from the Macquarie Hotel Sharks were selected as part of the inaugural Country Rugby League Cups competition.
Both were selected in the run-on team.
The team will assemble in Sydney on July 23 and travel to Winton in Queensland to play a Queensland Outback team on July 26.
The selection of Costigan will ease the pain of his side’s 20-16 loss to Kendall on Saturday.
Kendall’s centre pairing of Drew Gunning and Drew Bartlett each crossed for tries in the first half.
Both were scored late in the first 40 minutes with Gunning’s try in the 31st minute and Bartlett’s just four minutes later. Second rower, Chris Hanlon booted one conversion for their 10 points.
The second half saw the Kendall outfit stretch their lead further when replacement Greg Darcy scored four minutes after the restart of play.
Hanlon could not add the extras to that try or Sam Summers’ try at the 56th minute. But Kendall were clear leaders at 18 points to 0.
Long Flat eventually got on the scoreboard at the 65th minute when second rower Jason Costigan scored a try. Shane Franklin booted the extras for a 18-6 scoreline.
Eight minutes from full time, Hanlon booted a penalty goal before Long Flat finished the match with two late tries.
Second rower Spike Robb crossed five minutes from time, Franklin booted the extras to draw closer at 20-12.
And one minute from time Dragons replacement Sean Christie got over the tryline. Franklin failed with the conversion attempt leaving the full time score at 20-16.
In other Hastings League matches on the weekend, Macquarie Hotel defeated Beechwood 54-12 while Crescent Head downed a gallant Port Boardriders 66-20.
