LONG Flat and Kendall battled another epic Hastings League match during the 2008 semi final series at the Lank Bain Sporting Complex on Saturday.
With a place in the grand final up for grabs, it was the Blues who were victorious 26 points to 20.
The loss is the end of the season for the Dragons, while the Blues will now tackle minor premier, Macquarie Hotel in the grand final at the Lank Bain Sporting Complex on Saturday.
In Saturdays’ Final, the Kendall Blues opened the scoring in just the fifth minute when winger Dave Robertson crossed for a try. Halfback Nick Christensen failed with his conversion attempt leaving the score at 4-0.
The Dragons hit back almost immediately when hooker Jason Costigan got over the tryline in the 11th minute. Shane Franklin could not add the extras which left the scores at 4-4.
Kendall extended its lead in the 18th minute when one of their best, fullback Greg Darcy scored a great try. Christenson was able to add the extras for a 10-4 lead.
The see-sawing nature of the match continued five minutes later when captain coach Jason Morrison got over the tryline. Franklin booted the conversion attempt to again lock the scores up at 10-10.
With the match delicately poised, it was the Kendall side who stamped its authority in the critical period before halftime.
Thirteen minutes from the break, centre Drew Gunning posted a try for the Blues and then, critically, three minutes from the break, Christenson got over the tryline. The half back could not add the extras points for either try but the Blues were 20-10 leaders at half time.
Knowing their season was the balance, the Dragons took the field in the second half in an up-tempo mood. And it worked wonders.
Hooker Costigan got over the tryline just eight minutes after the resumption and although Franklin failed to convert the Dragons were back in the contest at 20-14.
Costigan made it a trifecta of tries when he again got over the tryline in the 60th minute. Franklin locked the scores up at 20-20 when he converted the try.
With the excitement building, and the fans roaring, a Kendall penalty was converted by Christenson to draw his side to a 22-20 scoreline.
Five minutes from full time, Gunning got over the tryline for the match winner for the Blues. Christenson could not add the extras leaving the full time score at 26-20.
In a brilliant game of football, both teams should be congratulated on their performance.
