Shamrocks score Cup victory

BEECHWOOD scored an emphatic 40 points to 6 win over Port Boardriders to claim the Bun Hayward Cup on Hastings League grand final day at the Lank Bain Sporting Complex on Saturday.

In front of a very good crowd, the Shamrocks led 34-0 at the half time break but the second stanza did not have the fireworks of the first 30 minutes.

Beechwood started strongly and posted its first try inside the first 60 seconds of play when fullback Quintan Paine ran 50 metres to score untouched. Tom Lawson booted the conversion for a 6-0 lead.

Just three minutes later, winger Ben Phillpott crossed wide out and two minutes later busy hooker Mark Williams crashed over the tryline. Lawson booted one of the conversion attempts for a 16-0 lead.

The game got even worse for the Port based team when front rower Todd Howe barged through some poor defence to post his sides four try of the game at the 12th minute mark.

Lawson landed the conversion for a 22-0 scoreline.

Two more tries – a second to Paine and Williams – stretched the score to 34-0 after Lawson landed both conversion attempts.

The second half was a case of missed opportunities, particularly for the Shamrocks, who could have scored at least three more tries in the opening 10 minutes.

But it was the Boardies who posted their first points of the game after 14 minutes when hooker James Niddrie dived over from close range. Ben Forbes landed the extras for a 34-6 scoreline.

The remainder of the half was a bit of an arm wrestle but three minutes from full time fullback Paine made it a trifecta of tries when he scooped up a loose pass just five metres from his own line and outsprinted the cover defence to score a great individual try.

Lawson booted the sideline conversion for the final score of 40-6.

For Beechwood, Williams, Paine, Andrigetto and A’Hoy played strongly for their team’s win.
