WAUCHOPE Public School’s reputation for soccer continues to grow.
In recent years the school has won the PSSA state crown, and been a finalist.
Now the senior boys team has started its march toward the state title after winning its first three matches in the state-wide knockout competition.
The team has accounted for Beechwood and Telegraph Point in recent matches and last week downed the strong North Haven side.
The team will now play the winner of the Kempsey East and Crescent Head with that winner to move into a zone play-off.
Ian Dickson described the win over the highly fancied and skilled North Haven side as ‘exciting and tense’.
“In a game that saw the ball seesaw from one end to the other both teams were nearly out on their feet with exhaustion at the end of a gruelling match,” Dickson said.
“The 1st half saw Wauchope kick with a strong breeze but to North Haven’s great credit, they hung on well to keep the score 0-0 at half time.
“In an amazing 2nd half, Wauchope held on with the backline of Trae Cole, Willis Thompson and Dane Elliott repelling attack after attack. Scott Dickson also came to life in the 2nd half and started to control the midfield against a now tiring North Haven team.
“With the scores locked up at 0-0 at fulltime, and the amazing statistic of no corners for the entire game, meant the game had to go into 5 minutes each way of extra time.
“Starting off in extra time, kicking against the wind, Dickson sent a beautiful ball through to an unmarked Cameron Styles who seized the moment with a magnificent high ball which just sailed over the top of the goalie’s hands which sent the Wauchope fans into hysteria which took the Wauchope team into a 1-0 lead.
“Then in the last 5 minutes a tiring North Haven tried valiantly to level the score but the Wauchope team held their nerve and held on for a thrilling, well-deserved 1-0 victory.
“Special mention to our amazing goallie, Daniel Holland, who saved every shot from North Haven especially one classic dive which saved Wauchope from being 1-0 down.”
The date for the game against the winner of the Kempsey East and Crescent Head match is yet to be fixed.
